Anchoring a Sauna Tent – how to do it on different surfaces

Setting up a sauna tent is simple, but anchoring is what determines whether the experience will be safe and long-lasting. Proper anchoring ensures that the tent stands stable in all weather, while protecting both the material and the people using it. Here we go through the most common surfaces, frequently asked questions, and practical tips on what works best.

Can the tent stay outside permanently in winter?

Many people wonder if the tent can stay up all year round. Our sauna tents are built for Nordic conditions and can handle both cold and snow. Still, it’s good to keep in mind that lifespan is affected if the tent stands up permanently.

  • In strong wind and heavy snow, always make sure the tent is properly anchored and that snow does not accumulate on the roof. If you live in an area with heavy snowfall, you can place a support pole in the center of the roof to prevent sagging. If it does sag, you can simply push it back out.
  • With proper care and anchoring, a tent can stay up for a long time even permanently, but the fabric and zippers will wear faster.

Grass and soil

The most common surface is actually decking or patios, but many also set up the tent on grass or soil.

  • Use the included ground pegs, preferably at a 45-degree angle for better grip.
  • If the ground is soft, for example after rain, you can reinforce with longer pegs, place weights along the tent fabric, or anchor to nearby trees and rocks.
  • Avoid pushing the peg straight down – it will loosen more easily.

Sand and beach

A loose surface that can be tricky.

  • Use longer pegs for better grip, if needed.
  • You can also place weights directly on the outside of the tent fabric, such as stones or sandbags.

Snow and ice

Works well with the right anchoring.

  • On ice, ice screws work best – we recommend our ice screw.
  • We also recommend our full protective floor when the tent is used on ice.

Decking and patios

A common question is whether the tent can be placed on decking, or if it has to be grass or sand. The answer is: it works perfectly fine on decking.

  • Anchor to fixed points such as railings, posts, or nearby trees.
  • Use heavy weights in the corners, such as sandbags, firewood sacks, or water containers.
  • Avoid leaving the tent free-standing – even light wind can move it.

Stone and concrete

The same principle applies as for decking.

  • Weights such as stones, concrete blocks, or water containers are the most practical.
  • Straps can be attached to fixed objects such as railings or posts.
  • A common mistake is relying only on the tent’s weight – in wind or with movement around the tent, it will quickly become unstable.

How much wind can the tent handle?

The sauna tents are designed to withstand normal Nordic weather, including strong wind.

  • With correct anchoring, they stand stable even in strong wind.
  • The key is making sure all sides are properly tensioned and that the tent is not left completely exposed in an open area during a storm.
  • The biggest risk is not that the tent breaks, but that it shifts if it’s not anchored.

How long does a tent last?

Lifespan depends greatly on use and care.

  • A tent that is used frequently and left outside all year will wear faster.
  • With proper care, you can expect several years of use, especially if you avoid leaving it damp or under heavy snow for extended periods.
  • Regular checks of zippers, seams, and anchor points make a big difference.
  • Our weather cover is an important investment to protect the fabric from UV radiation.

Summary

  • Always make sure the sauna tent is secured with both ground pegs and guy lines (or weights if pegs are not possible).
  • Adapt the anchoring to the surface and weather conditions.
  • In winter – remove snow that collects on the roof, use ice screws on ice, and anchor properly against wind.
  • A tent that stays up permanently works well as long as it’s securely anchored and has a weather cover – and it’s perfectly fine to enjoy sauna in it all year round.

A properly anchored tent not only makes for a safer sauna experience, but also extends the lifespan of the material. With correct anchoring, the experience will be just as calm and relaxing as it should be.
